Window Tint Violation Results in Seizure Of Defaced Firearm And Arrest

Last Monday, Trooper Jeffrey Lang of the Troop H Community Action Team was observing traffic on Massachusetts Avenue in Dorchester. Around 2:00PM, Trooper Lang conducted a traffic stop of a Jeep Compass with window tint well below the legal limit of 35% visible light transmission.

Trooper Lang approached the Jeep and immediately smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. While looking into the front window, Trooper Lang also saw a marijuana blunt, and a loose packet of marijuana near the center console.

Trooper Lang inquired about a bag behind the driver of the Jeep. The driver reached back for the bag and offered it to Trooper Lang to examine. Trooper Lang noted a heavy object contained within the bag and discovered it to be a Glock 9mm handgun with a red dot sight, 16-round magazine, and defaced serial number.

Trooper Lang had the driver, DUWAYNE CORBETT, 44, of Stoughton, step out of the vehicle and demanded his license to carry. CORBETT does not possess a license to carry a firearm. Trooper Lang placed CORBETT under arrest and secured him in the back of an MSP cruiser.

With Corbett under arrest, Trooper Lang’s tint meter determined the front windows of the Jeep to allow only 11% light transmission. A licensed operator took control of the Jeep and drove it from the scene of the traffic stop.

DUWAYNE CORBETT was scheduled to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of:

1.            Unlicensed Possession Of A Firearm (3rd Offense);

2.            Firearm Violation With Three Prior Violent/Drug Crimes;

3.            Receiving A Firearm With Defaced Serial Number;

4.            Carrying A Loaded Firearm;

5.            Possession Of A Large Capacity Firearm;

6.            Possession Of Ammunition Without FID; and

7.            Window Tint Violation.
