In the 351 cities and towns, Massachusetts State Troopers use their training and skill to navigate a variety of circumstances that often present significant danger to themselves and others. In an effort to raise greater awareness of their work, the Department periodically shares incident summaries.

Each summary represents a small portion of the Department’s work to enhance public safety, collaborate with our partners, and foster positive relationships within the communities we serve.

For the integrity of ongoing criminal cases and in the interest of each subject’s privacy, we have removed personally identifying information from the narratives as well as information not subject to public disclosure. All criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Illegal Gun and Large Capacity Magazines Seized

A Trooper from the Leominster Barracks was observing traffic when he noticed a car exit a motel parking lot with no headlights on. After asking for the driver’s information the Trooper discovered the vehicle’s registration was expired. Prior to towing the car, the Trooper conducted an inventory of the vehicle and found two loaded large capacity magazines inside a bag on the passenger seat. The driver did not have a license to carry firearms or ammunition. The operator was placed into handcuffs and secured in the rear of the Trooper’s cruiser. A search of the vehicle located a gun between the driver’s seat and center console. A third magazine was found in a second bag inside the vehicle. The driver was charged with multiple firearm offenses.

Speeder Arrested On Drug Distribution Charges

A Trooper assigned to the Shelbourne Falls Barracks stopped a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 91 in Deerfield. After asking for the driver’s license, the Trooper discovered the driver had a warrant for assault and battery on a police officer, reckless operation, and failure to stop for police. The Trooper called for backup and attempted to remove the man from the vehicle, but the man became uncooperative. With help from another Trooper, the man was removed from the vehicle and searched before being secured in a cruiser. The Troopers discovered a knife and a knotted plastic bag containing a substance similar to crack cocaine in the man’s pocket. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a black bag containing more baggies with the same white substance, as well as individual packets containing what appeared to be heroin, and two digital scales.

Machete and Gun Seized from Car During Traffic Stop

Troopers from the Springfield Barracks stopped a vehicle for a license plate violation. As they approached the vehicle, they observed the passenger turn her body away from them and manipulate a duffle bag that was in her lap. Unsure if she was reaching for a weapon, the Troopers ordered the passenger out of the vehicle and conducted a frisk of the woman and the car. After determining there were no weapons on her or in the bag, the Troopers turned their attention to the passenger area of the vehicle where they found a large machete next to the seat. Troopers also recovered a fully loaded revolver under the driver’s seat. Neither the driver nor passenger possessed an LTC and both were taken into custody.

A Trooper from the Milton Barracks was monitoring traffic on Route 138 when he noticed a black Ford Escape with a cracked windshield drive past. Upon running the Ford's license plate, the Trooper discovered the registration was revoked. The Trooper initiated a stop of the vehicle and began questioning the driver. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was subsequently arrested for unlicensed operation, and the vehicle was inventoried prior to a tow. During the inventory, Troopers discovered a black bag containing several small knotted baggies with a powdery substance consistent with cocaine.

Pursuit Leads To Arrest of Man With Four Warrants

A Trooper assigned to the Tunnels Barracks in Boston was on patrol when he observed a vehicle that had been involved in a pursuit with Braintree Police earlier that day. The Trooper activated his emergency lights but the vehicle fled. A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle continued traveling on Interstate 93 northbound. A female inside the pursued vehicle called 911 and stated she was being held against her will. A Trooper deployed stop sticks on the vehicle, causing the tires to deflate. The vehicle came to a stop and Troopers removed the operator and female occupant from the vehicle. The operator was discovered to have a suspended license and four arrest warrants.
