At approximately 9:45 a.m. today Troopers assigned to State Police-Westfield were dispatched to reports of a single vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer striking the guardrail on the median side of Route 90 eastbound at Mile Marker 33 in Blandford. While en route to this crash, Troopers were updated that a pedestrian had been struck by a second tractor-trailer on Route 90 westbound in the same area. Upon the arrival of Troopers, they discovered a man on the roadway of the westbound lanes who had succumbed to injuries at the scene sustained after being struck by the second tractor-trailer.
Preliminary investigation reveals the operator of the first tractor-trailer, identified as Nicholas Charles, 36, of Mechanicville, N.Y., struck the guardrail. After coming to a stop, he then attempted to enter the westbound lanes, on foot, to retrieve an item that became dislodged from his vehicle during the initial crash. While attempting to retrieve the item, he was struck by another tractor-trailer, operated by a 69-year-old man from Ontario, Canada.
The exact cause and circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by members of State Police-Westfield, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services, and detectives assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office. Troopers were on scene investigating the crash until approximately 2 p.m. with the left travel lanes eastbound and the right and center travel lanes westbound closed. No further information is available at this time.
