GREENFIELD - Shortly after 2 a.m. on October 25, Trooper Matthew Willhite, a recent
graduate of the 90th Recruit Training Troop, and his Field Training Officer, Trooper Scott Boutell, were patrolling I-91 in Deerfield. At that time they were made aware of a vehicle without valid license plates, known to them from a prior traffic stop approximately four hours earlier in which that vehicle was towed from the scene, being operated in the area of I-91. Additionally, the owner, who was operating the vehicle at the time of the prior traffic stop, had a suspended driver’s license.
The Troopers observed that vehicle being operated on I-91 northbound in Greenfield at an estimated speed of 90 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone. They were able to catch up to it, then immediately activated the cruiser’s blue lights and stopped the vehicle. Once the vehicle stopped, the Troopers approached it, and confirmed that the operator, identified as Deven Barrette, 33, of Sheldon, Vt., was indeed the same individual that was criminally charged and released at the prior interaction. Barrette was placed under arrest and searched prior to being placed in the rear of the cruiser. Troopers located a device containing suspected Crack Cocaine and a large round package containing approximately 50 grams of suspected Heroin. At this point Troopers began a search of the vehicle and located a bag containing items commonly used in the packaging and sale of illegal narcotics as well as a large amount of US Currency, suspected to be the proceeds of the sale of illegal narcotics.
Barrette was transported to the Shelburne Falls Barracks for booking where a bail commissioner set a bail amount of $10,000. Barrette was eventually transported to Greenfield District Court where he was arraigned on the following charges:
1. Trafficking in Heroin/Fentanyl;
2. Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle;
3. Speeding; and,
4. License Plate Violation.
