Lynnfield - Shortly before 6 p.m. on August 13, Trooper Steven Lopez of the Danvers Barracks, was operating his cruiser on Route 1 in Lynnfield when he observed a Mercedes SUV with extremely dark window tint. Trooper Lopez activated his cruiser’s blue lights and stopped the vehicle on Route 1 in the area of Canterbury Road.
Trooper Lopez approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, Melffrin Perez-Fenandez, 40, of Lawrence. As Perez-Fenandez retrieved the vehicle’s registration, Trooper Lopez observed a substance suspected to be illegal narcotics wrapped in a “corner bag,” a common way to package narcotics for sale or distribution.
Trooper Lopez removed Perez-Fenandez and detained him in his cruiser while further investigating. Trooper Lopez conducted a search of the vehicle that yielded approximately 23 grams a substance suspected to be Fentanyl, packaged in 38 separate bag twists.
Additionally, Trooper Lopez measured the window tint of the Mercedes which failed to meet the 35% Visible Light Transmission required by Massachusetts law.
Perez-Fenandez was placed under arrest and transported to the Danvers Barracks for booking. A bail commissioner was contacted and set bail at $25,000. He was eventually arraigned at Peabody District Court for the following charges:
1. Trafficking in Fentanyl;
2. Possession of a Class A Drug with Intent to Distribute;
3. Illegal Window Tint; and
4. Failure to Wear Seatbelt.
