Police Chaplains play a vital role to the agencies they serve, and we were pleased last week to welcome Reverend James S. Mazzone to the Massachusetts State Police Chaplain Corps. Father Mazzone was sworn-in as one of our Chaplains by Colonel John Mawn Jr. in a brief ceremony in the Colonel's office at General Headquarters.
Currently the Pastor of St. John, Guardian of our Lady Parish Clinton, Father Mazzone previously served as Director of the Office of Vocations for the Diocese of Worcester as well as the Diocese's Holy Name of Jesus House of Studies. Massachusetts State Police Chaplains, who serve voluntarily, provide non-denominational spiritual support and counseling to Department members and community citizens as needed. Chaplains often work closely with the Department's Employee Assistance Unit.
The photos show Father Mazzone, standing with Colonel Mawn, taking the Oath of Office for the Chaplain Corps; meeting Lieutenant Colonels Mark Cyr and Brian Connors, commanders of the Division of Homeland Security and the Division of Investigative Services, respectively; and speaking with Detective Lieutenant James Massari of the Superintendent's Office.
