SERIOUS INJURY CRASH, ROUTE 495 CHELMSFORD, VEHICLE THROUGH MEDIAN TO OTHER SIDE

At 9:47 AM today (Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023) Massachusetts State Troopers and other emergency personnel responded to Route 495 north in Chelmsford for a motor vehicle crash with serious injuries. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2022 Volkswagen Taos sport utility vehicle was being operated southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes, where it struck a northbound 2006 BMW sedan.

The driver of the BMW, a 75-year-old Ayer man, was seriously injured and entrapped in his vehicle. Firefighters cut the roof off the vehicle to extricate him, and he was transported by medical helicopter to Lahey Hospital in Burlington. His passenger, a 75-year-old Ayer woman, was transported to an area hospital by ground ambulance. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 65-year-old Newburyport woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to an area hospital.

The facts and circumstances of the crash, including why the Volkswagen crossed through the median, remains under investigation by the State Police-Concord Barracks, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and State Police Crime Scene Services Section. All units were clear at 12:05 PM. The rescue response and subsequent crash investigation necessitated the closure of all northbound lanes at the Chelmsford Rest Area, and the temporary closure of southbound lanes at various times. The lane closures caused traffic northbound traffic to back up to Route 2 in Littleton and southbound traffic to Route 38 in Lowell.
