State Police Investigating Apparent Drowning Off Castle Island in South Boston

The Massachusetts State Police are investigating the death of an elderly woman who apparently drowned while swimming in Pleasure Bay off Castle Island in South Boston yesterday.

Preliminary investigation by Troopers assigned to the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County and the Troop H Detective Unit indicates that the victim, a 93-year-old female client of a private adult day care program was at the beach with other members from the home for a supervised trip. The victim entered the water with two friends who are fellow clients, with instructions to remain in shallow water. At some point, according to the investigation, at roughly noontime, the victim inadvertently swam into deeper water; when she realized the depth of the water she was in, she appeared to panic and yelled for help before becoming submerged. Her two friends swam to her and began to pull her to shore. Lifeguards also responded and assisted in getting the victim to shore and, once on the beach, the lifeguards immediately began performing CPR.

Boston EMS arrived on scene moments later and took over care of the victim, whom they transported to Boston Medical Center. She succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine official cause and manner of death. Barring any unforeseen developments, expect no further updates.
