Shortly after 2:20 a.m. today, a Trooper assigned to State Police Springfield attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Route 291 eastbound prior to Exit 4 in Springfield. The Trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, a 2013 Infinity G37, after observing it unable to maintain the boundaries of its lane, crossing over the lane markings. Initially the vehicle pulled to the right, signaled, and appeared to be stopping. However, the operator quickly accelerated away from the Trooper reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.
As the vehicle continued away from the Trooper, the operator attempted to exit Route 291 using the Exit 4 ramp at a high rate of speed. The Trooper did not pursue the vehicle as it exited the ramp and instead continued on Route 291. The operator failed to negotiate the curve, crashed, and rolled over. The operator, a 41-year-old man from Springfield, suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene by paramedics. The entirety of the pursuit, from the point where the operator of the vehicle fled from the Trooper to the location it crashed, is estimated to be less than one mile.
No further information is available at this time. The incident remains under investigation by Troopers assigned to Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police along with Troopers assigned to the Hampden County State Police Detective Unit, Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, and Crime Scene Services Section. Troopers were assisted at the scene by Springfield Fire & EMS, Springfield Police, and MassDOT.
