At approximately 2:15 p.m. today Troopers assigned to State Police-Andover responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a tractor trailer on Route 3 northbound at mile marker 84 in Chelmsford. Chelmsford Fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene as well.

Upon their arrival they observed a 2014 Nissan Rogue disabled in the breakdown lane and a tractor trailer, operated by a 44-year-old man from Cambridge, stopped approximately 300 feet ahead. Emergency crews immediately located a 77-year-old man suffering from serious injuries after being struck by the tractor trailer. He was the operator of the Nissan, but outside of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The exact cause and circumstances of the crash, including why the Nissan was stopped and why the operator was outside of the vehicle, remain under investigation by Troopers assigned to Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruciton Section, Middlesex County State Police Detective Unit, State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The first and second travel lanes were closed for approximately three hours to facilitate the crash investigation. No further information is available at this time.
