State Police Investigating Serious Injury Crash on Route 195 in New Bedford
Massachusetts State Police Troopers from State Police-Dartmouth are investigating a crash in New Bedford that resulted in the serious injury of a Rochester man.
Just before 4:30 p.m., a 2003 Ford Pick-up was traveling Westbound on Route 195 in New Bedford when, for reasons that remain under investigation, it had mechanical problems that resulted in what is believed to be the transmission sending debris into oncoming traffic on the Eastbound side of Route 195 . The preliminary investigation indicates that the operator of a 2011 Mazda Tribute was struck by debris coming through the windshield. The Mazda continued down the road before striking the median barrier.
The driver of the Mazda, a 69 year-old Rochester man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious life threatening injuries.
No charges have been filed at this time.
The crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County. Troopers were also assisted on scene by New Bedford and Dartmouth EMS and Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The left travel lane was closed in the area of the crash to facilitate the rescue response and investigation. All East bound lanes were closed for the removal of the vehicle at 6:50 p.m. All lanes were reopened at approximately 7:45 p.m.
