MSP Gang Unit, Fitchburg Police Seize Assault Rifle, Arrest Suspect

The Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit and Fitchburg Police detectives, as part of an investigation, Monday night executed a search warrant at a second-floor apartment at 38 Green St. in Fitchburg, which led to the arrest of the target of the investigation and the seizure of an illegally-possessed rifle and ammunition.

At approximately 8 p.m. Monday, the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactical Operations Team, the Department’s specialized high-risk entry and arrest unit, made entry into the apartment. Troopers immediately determined that the target of the investigation, LAWRENCE H. SCOTT, 21, of that address, was not present.

SCOTT, however, arrived at the address while members of the MSP Gang Unit and K9 Section and Fitchburg detectives were executing the search warrant. When he observed police outside the residence, he ran off. Troopers and Officers located SCOTT a short time later behind a Water Street building and arrested him without incident.

During the search of the apartment, police located and seized an SKS assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine containing 21 7.62 rounds of ammunition, an additional loose 7.62 round, and a plastic bag containing two .40 caliber rounds and 18 9mm rounds.

Troopers charged SCOTT with the following offenses:

  1. Illegal possession of a firearm;
  2. Illegal possession of ammunition;
  3. Possession of a large-capacity feeding device; and
  4. Improper storage of a firearm.

SCOTT was transported to State Police-Leominster, where he was booked. He was expected to have been arraigned yesterday in Fitchburg District Court.
