Gang Unit, Task Force Officers Arrest Springfield Man, Seize Firearm

Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, along with members of the Western Massachusetts Gang Task Force and the Hampden County Narcotic Task Force charged two people and seized an illegally possessed firearm in Springfield yesterday afternoon.

Troopers and Task Force Officers, in furtherance of an investigation into narcotics distribution, executed a search warrant shortly after 3 p.m. at the first floor apartment at 37 Virginia St. When officers knocked and announced themselves, no one answered the door; they subsequently made entry and located two adult males, an adult female, and two juveniles in the apartment.

As entry was made, an officer outside the home performing perimeter security observed a man, later identified as ALEX GONZALEZ, 29, of different Springfield address, try to flee from a window. The officer ordered GONZAEZ back into the apartment, where Troopers and Task Force Officers located him in a bedroom. Also located in the bedroom was a 35-year-old woman who lives in the apartment.

Troopers located a small chrome handgun under the bed that GONZALEZ was standing next to, and also took a folding knife from his front pocket.

GONZALEZ was arrested and transported to State Police-Springfield, where he was booked on the following charges:

  1. Unlawful possession of a firearm;
  2. Possession of a loaded firearm;
  3. Possession of a firearm by a person previously convicted of two violent or drug crimes; and
  4. Unlawful possession of ammunition.

The female occupant of the apartment will be summonsed for firearm and ammunition charges.
