A late-night crash yesterday resulted in the death of the operator.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kevin Quiterio indicates that at about 10:00 p.m., an adult male was traveling in the right travel lane on Route 91 Southbound at Exit 4 in in Springfield in a 2004 Toyota Highlander when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle causing it to cross all three travel lanes and strike the left side guardrail. The vehicle then traveled back across the highway and struck the right side guardrail. The operator and sole occupant was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. He was subsequently determined to be deceased at the scene.
This crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, troopers assigned to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The identity of the operator is being withheld pending family notification.
