April 13, 2019— A three-car crash at about 2:10 a.m., claimed the life of a Northampton man.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kevin Quiterio indicates Yerly Jared Santizo Morales, 26, of Northampton, was traveling in a 2012 Hyundai Eleantra on Route 91 north prior to Exit 2 in Springfield when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the center median. The vehicle came to rest in the left travel lane. He was determined deceased at the scene.
A 2015 Honda Civic, also traveling Northbound, stopped to assist. The driver, a 23-year-old female from Westfield and her passenger, a 25 year-old man from Florence were then struck by an oncoming vehicle, a 2015 Toyota Avalon. Both parties were transported to Baystate Medical for treatment of injuries.
The operator of the Avalon, a 44-year-old man from Westfield sustained minor injuries and was transported to Baystate Medical.
This crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Detective Unit for Hampden County, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The left, center and break down lanes were closed approximately four hours.
State Police were assisted on scene by AMR and MassDOT.
