Just before 2:00 a.m. today Trooper Daniel Dziminski, assigned to the Springfield Barracks, was patrolling Route 91 in Springfield when he conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan Altima he determined to have a suspended registration.
Through subsequent investigation on scene, Trooper Dziminski determined the passenger, JOSE RIVERA, 41 of Holyoke, had an active warrant for his arrest for charges prosecuted out of Holyoke District Court. Trooper Frank Deluca then arrived on scene to assist and RIVERA was taken into custody.
Trooper Dziminski returned to the vehicle and informed the operator, identified as EIVAN SANTIAGO, 19 of Chicopee, it would need to be towed as the registration was suspended. SANTIAGO exited the vehicle and the troopers began a tow inventory.
During the inventory, the troopers located a black Glock 19 pistol equipped with a high capacity magazine and loaded with 22 rounds. Neither of the men possessed a license to carry firearms. Troopers also located a bag containing nearly 1,800 various prescription pills, none of which either man had a prescription for.
Both RIVERA and SANTIAGO were transported to the State Police Springfield Barracks for booking. They were unable to produce funds for bail and were transported to the Ludlow House of Corrections pending their arraignment this morning at Springfield District Court. RIVERA and SANTIAGO were each charged with the following:
- Illegal Possession of a Firearm;
- Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device;
- Possession of Ammunition without FID Card;
- Improper Storage of a Firearm;
- Possession of a Class E Drug;
