Yesterday at approximately 3:15 p.m. members of the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, along with members of the Fitchburg Police Drug Unit, were conducting surveillance in the area of Main Street and Prichard Street in Fitchburg.
Shortly after they began, an undercover trooper was approached by two men asking if he wanted to purchase marijuana. After the sale was conducted, one of the two men asked the trooper if he was interested in purchasing a gun. Once a price was agreed upon, they set a location to meet 30 minutes later in order to conduct the sale. In that time frame troopers and officers were briefed on the operation and began to stage in the area.
As the meeting time approached, the trooper traveled to the set location in his undercover cruiser where he made contact with one of the two men, identified as LEON LORIME, 27, of Fitchburg. The trooper waved LORIME to enter his cruiser at which time they traveled to the home where the gun was located, with the other surveillance cruisers following. LORIME, giving directions, eventually pointed to the house that the gun was located where they met with another man, identified as LUIS ENRIQUEZ, 21, of Fitchburg. After a brief conversation LORIME exited the undercover cruiser, entered the residence, and after several minutes reentered the cruiser.
Once LORIME was seated in the cruiser again, he pulled out the gun allowing the undercover trooper to inspect it, at which time he verified it was a large .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol. The trooper then used a predetermined signal to the surveillance cruisers informing other officers and a marked police cruiser to move in and take the LORIME and ENRIQUEZ in custody.
A subsequent search of LORIME’s person revealed several folded pieces of paper containing substances believed to be Heroin and Crack Cocaine. A computer search of the serial number located on the pistol revealed it had been stolen from New Jersey.
Both men were transported to the Fitchburg Police Station for booking where bail was set. They were arraigned today in Fitchburg District Court where they were both placed back in custody pending a dangerousness hearing.
