Crash on Route 495 in Boxborough Kills Melrose Man

News Release

February 12, 2019 – This morning, at approximately 1:35 a.m., troopers from the State Police-Leominster Barracks responded to reports of a single-car crash on Route 495 south, south of Exit 28 in Boxborough, that resulted in a fatality.

Upon arrival, Trooper Benjamin Breton found a 2011 Mercedes Benz, driven by Phong Le, 41, of Melrose, in the median near the wood line. Trooper Breton’s investigation indicates the Mercedes was traveling south on Route 495, when for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered to the left, struck a guardrail which caused the operator to be ejected.  Le was determined deceased at the scene by a member of the Boxborough Fire Department.

The left and middle travel lanes were closed for approximately three and a half hours.

Troopers from the Leominster Barracks were assisted on scene by members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section (CSSS), State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), Boxborough Fire Department and EMS.

No further information is currently available.  Please do not contact the barracks directly.
