October 4, 2018 – An early morning crash on I-90 in Charlton resulted in the death of a Springfield man.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper William Doogan indicates that at about 3:40 A.M., a 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer was stopped in traffic in the middle travel lane on I-90 Westbound in Charlton, just prior to Exit 9, due to activities at a construction zone which necessitated a temporary road closure. A 2017 Ford Transit van, which was traveling westbound, crashed into the back of the tractor-trailer.
The operator of the Ford Transit, a 51-year-old man from Springfield, was determined to be deceased at the scene. The operator of the tractor-trailer, a 58-year-old man from Chicopee, was uninjured in the crash.
While this crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, it is believed that the operator of the Transit van failed to observe that traffic had stopped and crashed into the trailer at highway speed.
State Police were assisted on scene by Charlton Fire and EMS, Sturbridge Fire, and MassDOT. Additionally, two citizens who stopped at the crash scene assisted troopers in attempting to gain access to the victim.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
