Troopers Arrest Man After Armed Carjacking
September 1, 2018 – Yesterday afternoon, State Troopers arrested RICKY AVILES Jr., 38, of Northampton, after he fled a motor vehicle stop and then found hiding in a third floor apartment on Elm Street in Holyoke.
At about 10:30 a.m., Trooper Jonathan Blanchard assigned to the State Police Barracks in Springfield was on patrol when he heard a BOLO (Be on the Look Out) alert from Springfield Police for a red Toyota Corolla with a Virginia registration that had been carjacked by a suspect with a firearm.
At about 11:52 a.m., Trooper Blanchard spotted the Corolla stopped in traffic on the northbound side of Main Street in West Springfield. Trooper Blanchard activated his emergency lights in an attempt to effect a motor vehicle stop. As Trooper Blanchard approached the Corolla’s driver’s side door, AVILES pulled out of traffic and proceeded north in the southbound travel lane driving erratically, weaving in between vehicles as he continued north on Route 5 into Holyoke.
Holyoke Police located the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot on Appleton Street and AVILES was seen running from the vehicle into an apartment building on Elm Street.
State Police and Holyoke Police set up a perimeter and quickly determined AVILES did not exit the building. Troopers and Officers entered the building and began searching for AVILES, who, as stated above, was located hiding in a third floor apartment. AVILES was placed under arrest and transported to the Springfield Barracks where he was booked on the following charges;
Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Subsequent Offense;
Negligent Operation of Motor Vehicle;
Operate Motor Vehicle with License Revoked as Habitual Traffic Offender;
B&E Daytime for Felony;
Failure Stop for Police;
Marked Lanes Violation;
Failure To Stop/Yield Red Light; and
Failure Wear Seat Belt.
AVILES was arraigned in Springfield District Court.
