Massachusetts State Police Media Release–08132018–Man Arrested after Fleeing a Motor Vehicle Crash while Under the Influence of Narcotics and Alcohol

Yesterday, at about 4:05 p.m., Trooper James Maloney assigned to the State Police Barracks in Revere responded to a hit and run on Route 1 North in Chelsea. Initial reports from the scene indicated a white Infiniti SUV sideswiped a Honda Fit causing both air bags to deploy and disabling the vehicle in the right travel lane just north of the on-ramp from Carter Street. The Infiniti continued north but was later found abandoned by Chelsea Police on Jefferson Avenue with significant damage to the passenger side.

Minutes after the crash, Chelsea Police located the operator, a  38-year-old South Boston man, but the suspect fled by jumping over a fence into a flooded marsh area near Webster Avenue. Subsequently, Chelsea Police broadcast the suspect’s description as a male wearing a white shirt and black shorts.

Trooper’s Christopher Kane, Chad Doucette and Jennifer Penton assisted in the search and located the suspect laying down in the water hiding in the marsh. Trooper Kane used bolt cutters to cut part of the fence in order for the troopers to gain access to the marsh area and place the suspect under arrest. The suspect was transported to the Revere Barracks where he was booked on the following charges:

  1. Operating Under the Influence of liquor;
  2. Operating Under the Influence of Drugs;
  3. Operating after License Revocation;
  4. Leaving the Scene if a Property Damage Crash;
  5. Possession of a Class B Drug, 2nd Offense;
  6. Possession of Open Container of Alcohol in Motor Vehicle; and
  7. Marked Lanes violation.

During the investigation, troopers also learned Andover Police were actively searching for the man, who was the suspect in a domestic assault. He was additionally charged as a fugitive from justice, as well as with disorderly conduct, trespassing, and resisting arrest. State law prohibits releasing the name of domestic assault suspects in order to protect the identity of the victim.

The occupants in the Honda Fit were not injured in the crash.

The suspect was held at the Medford Barracks pending his arraignment today in Chelsea District Court.

No further information is available. Please do not call the barracks directly for media inquiries.
