Massachusetts State Police Media Release – 12242016 – State Police Investigating Pedestrian Fatal in Lowell

This morning at about 3:20 a.m., State Police from the Leominster barracks responded to a crash involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian on Route 495 southbound in Lowell which resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Robert Holland indicates that a 2005 Ford pickup was traveling on Route 495 southbound, south of exit 37, when it collided with a 39-year-old man from Bradford, Maine, who was positioned in the second travel lane of the roadway. As a result of that collision, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The operator of the pickup, a 61-year-old Chelmsford man, was transported to Lowell General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

This crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services and Crime Scene Services. Part of that investigation will include determining why the pedestrian, whose vehicle was located in the breakdown lane nearby, was in the travel part of the way.  No charges have been filed at this time.

State Police were assisted on scene by Chelmsford Police, Fire, and EMS, Lowell Police, and MassDOT.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification. Please do not contact the barracks for media inquiries.
