At approximately 6:56 p.m. last night Massachusetts State Police from the Middleboro Barracks responded to reports of a motor vehicle crash on Route 495 southbound, south of Exit 8, in Raynham. Troopers arriving on-scene determined that two vehicles had been involved in the crash, and that one of the drivers had been ejected in the median strip. That driver died later last night at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2002 Jeep Wrangler operated by Hayley M. Sanford, 19, of Seekonk, was traveling southbound in the right lane of Route 495, before entering the middle lane and colliding with a 2007 Honda CRV. The impact sent both vehicles into the dirt median. Preliminary investigation indicates that the Wrangler rolled over, causing Ms. Sanford to be ejected and suffer serious injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Raynham Park, where she was put into a medical helicopter and flown to Rhode Island Hospital. She passed away at the hospital late yesterday evening.
The force of the collision caused the Honda to cross through the median, enter the northbound side of Route 495, cross all northbound lanes, and end up on the far shoulder of the northbound side. The operator of the Honda, a 76-year-old New Bedford woman, was transported to Morton Hospital in Taunton with minor injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police, with the assistance of the State Police Detective Unit for Bristol County. No further information is being released at this time.
