UPDATE on Sumner Tunnel Crash


The crash in the Sumner Tunnel involved one vehicle only, a 2002 Dodge Ram pickup that. Preliminary investigation indicates that the truck, for reasons still under investigation, went out of control at approximately 3:10 a.m. in the area of the ramp to Route 93 north.

An adult male occupant suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Two other occupants, also adult males, suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. One surviving victim was transported to Tufts Medical Center, the other to Mass. General.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and State Police detectives.

The Sumner was initially closed to accommodate the rescue response and crash investigation. The tunnel was reopened a short time ago with only the ramp remaining closed. The ramp should be reopened shortly.
