The State Police investigation has determined that the victim’s vehicle in this crash was struck by a metal manhole cover that became dislodged and airborne. The cover normally rests atop a manhole in the left lane of Route 93 southbound near the exit of the O’Neill Tunnel. Preliminary investigation suggests it struck the victim’s windshield somewhere in that vicinity. After impact, the vehicle continued southbound in the left lane of Route 93 reaching near the area of East Berkeley street before hitting the wall on the left shoulder and coming to a stop. What caused the manhole to become dislodged is part of the ongoing investigation.
We have identified the victim, an adult woman, but are not releasing her name, age, or hometown, or the year, make, and model of her car, at this time pending proper notification of next-of-kin.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County.
