Troopers Charge Two for Assaults of Woman with Disabilities

Massachusetts State Police yesterday arrested a Methuen man and a Haverhill woman in connection with the sexual assault of a woman with disabilities.

Troopers assigned to the state’s Disabled Persons Protection Commission charged JOHN R. LEONE Jr., 65, with three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault and battery on a person with a disability. Troopers additionally charged NANCY BARR, 54, with assault and battery on a disabled person. Evidence uncovered by the troopers indicates that BARR, a caretaker of the victim, allowed assaults to be committed against the victim.

Both defendants were arrested yesterday by Troopers Jodi Gerardi and David Coker and booked at the State Police Barracks in Andover. They were held overnight for arraignment today in an Essex County courthouse. At their arraignment today, they were ordered held without bail until a Jan. 2 dangerousness hearing. The case is being prosecuted by the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

The victim is an adult woman. No further information about her, or about specific details of the crimes, will be released in order to protect her identity.

The investigation began after allegations of rape were reported to the Disabled Persons Protection Commission.
