UPDATE: Massachusetts State Police Release — 12222014 — State Police Investigate Fatal Head-On Crash In New Salem

At 3:10 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Athol responded to reports of a two-car, head-on crash on Route 202 at Route 122 in the town of New Salem.

Preliminary information collected in the investigation by Trooper Christopher Call indicates that a 2014 Dodge Van operated by 67-year-old RICHARD MARSH of Belchertown was travelling southbound on Route 202 when it collided with a 2007 Sterling box truck which was traveling northbound. MARSH was transported from the scene by New Salem EMS to Athol Memorial Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead.  The operator of the box truck, 23-year-old Raymond Phelps of Greenfield was uninjured in the crash.

Troopers assigned to the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office were on scene to investigate the crash. New Salem Police and New Salem Fire Department also assisted at the scene.  Traffic was rerouted around the location of the crash for over two hours during the response to the crash and the following investigation.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. No further information is available. Please do not contact the barracks.
