Massachusetts State Police Media Release – 10062014 – Rhode Island Man Arrested for Illegal Possession of a Shotgun
In the early morning on October 6, 2014 Tpr Michael Best, assigned to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro, stopped a Cadillac Deville with New Hampshire plates on Route 95 south in Dedham for a motor vehicle violation. The operator, Mr. Troy Fortes, age 27, of 11 Newcomb St in Providence, was extremely nervous and sweating profusely. Mr. Fortes could not locate a vehicle registration and stated he did not know the name of the owner of the vehicle. Tpr Best observed what appeared to be a gun case, with the words “Gun Guard” printed on it, in the back seat of the vehicle.
Dispatchers advised Tpr Best that Mr. Fortes had no license to carry in Massachusetts or Rhode Island and they were attempting to contact the registered owner of the vehicle. Tpr Webb-Johnson of the H Troop Community Action Team arrived to back up Tpr Best. Mr. Fortes was ordered out of the vehicle and inside the gun case the Troopers located a Browning Arms 12 gauge semiautomatic shotgun. Mr. Fortes disavowed any knowledge of the shotgun and stated that the vehicle belonged to his uncle.
Tpr Best arrested Mr. Fortes and transported him to the State Police Barracks in Foxboro for booking. Tpr Best contacted the Portsmouth NH police who advised him the vehicle in question had been reported as missing two hours prior to the stop. The owner reported that it had been taken and never returned, but they did not wish to report it as stolen.
Mr. Fortes was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Shotgun, Using a Motor Vehicle Without Authority, and Defective Tail Light
