Massachusetts State Police Media Release – 09292014 – Troopers Investigating Head On Crash on Route 2 in Phillipston
Troopers working out of the State Police Barracks in Athol responded to reports of a head on crash with injuries at 1:50 PM. The crash occurred at the 78.4 mile marker in the town of Phillipston. The initial cell phone call to 911 reported a vehicle travelling eastbound on Route 2 crossed the center lane markings and struck a vehicle in the westbound lane head on.
Trooper David Stewart and Trooper Mark Whitcomb, both assigned to the State Police Barracks in Athol, responded to the scene. The Phillipston Fire Department and EMS responded to assist with four injured occupants. The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 1993 Toyota Camry, was ejected from his vehicle and had life threatening injuries. A Life Flight helicopter was dispatched to the scene and he was transported to UMASS Medical Center in Worcester. Two adults and one toddler from the westbound vehicle, a 2012 Honda CRV, were transported by ambulance to Heywood Hospital in Gardner.
The eastbound lanes of Route 2 were closed due to the crash, with eastbound traffic being diverted at exit 18 onto Route 2A in Athol. Troopers from the Crime Scene Services and the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section responded to investigate the crash. The road closure was in effect until 4 PM and heavy traffic backups are expected to last into the evening commute.
The operator of the Toyota Camry that crossed over the center lane markings has been identified as Jeffrey J. Cronin, age 53 of Orange MA.
The Honda CRV that was struck had the following occupants: The operator was Travis A. Reed, age 26, with passengers Kristin E. Reed age 26 and a 1 year old male, all from Gardner.
