Massachusetts State Police Release – 09292014 – Trooper Intervenes Car Theft in West Springfield
Early Sunday morning, September 28, 2014 at approximately 1:45 a.m., Sergeant Ronald Gibbons, assigned to the State Police Detective Unit at Hampden County, was assigned to the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) in the Springfield area. This STEP is primarily for enforcement of traffic violations in high crime areas.
Sergeant Gibbons was traveling on Route 5 Southbound in West Springfield, when he observed a man and woman standing outside of a Nissan Rogue that was pulled over on the side of Route 5. It appeared to Sergeant Gibbons that the man and woman were reaching into the vehicle, attempting to stop the driver from pulling away.
As a result of an investigation, Sergeant Gibbons learned that the woman standing outside the vehicle was in fact the owner of the Nissan and the driver was attempting to steal it. It was later learned that the vehicle owner and passenger had pulled over in the Nissan, exited the vehicle, making an attempt to retrieve an item that dropped from within the passenger compartment and out onto the roadway. While the man and woman were outside the vehicle, a second vehicle pulled up, and a third man, later identified as JOSE ESTEBAN GUEVARA-NEGRON, 27, of Springfield exited the second vehicle, entered the driver’s seat of the Nissan and was attempting to drive it away.
GUEVARA-NEGRON was placed under arrest and brought to the Springfield Barracks for booking. He will be arraigned this morning in Springfield District Court on the following charges:
- Larceny of a motor vehicle
- Attempt to commit a crime
- Operating with a suspended license
No further information is available. Please do not contact the barracks directly.
