Massachusetts State Police Release — 06152014 — Peabody Man Arrested After Pursuits In New Hampshire, Mass.; Investigation Ongoing

A Peabody man is under arrest at the State Police Barracks in Medford after leading police in two states on a pursuit from New Hampshire to Boston, while Massachusetts State Police detectives investigate whether the suspect kidnapped another man who was in the fleeing pickup truck with him.

MICHAEL DANIELS, 33, was apprehended by Boston Police while on foot in North Station. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a pellet gun. State troopers are currently determining what charges DANIELS will face; he is expected to be held overnight and arraigned in the Charlestown Division of the Boston Municipal Court tomorrow.

Meanwhile, detectives from the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County are investigating whether a 27-year-old man who was a passenger in the pickup truck DANIELS was driving was kidnapped by him. The passenger’s claim that he is a kidnapping victim has not been verified at this time. The second man is also a Peabody resident.

The incident began at 4:37 p.m., when Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, which covers the northeast section of the state, received information that Salem, N.H., Police were pursuing a stolen red GMC pickup with New Hampshire plates on Route 93 southbound. Two men were in the truck. Area patrols were notified.

A minute later Salem, N.H., Police terminated the pursuit. Several minutes later, Massachusetts troopers took a report from another vehicle that had been sideswiped by the pickup on Route 93 near the intersection with Route 495.

At approximately 4:52 p.m. Trooper Michael Rockett, who is assigned to the Medford Barracks, reported that he was behind the fleeing pickup truck on Route 93 southbound in Stoneham. The trooper attempted to stop the truck; the suspect refused to stop. A pursuit was initiated by Troop A Headquarters, which assumed command and control. The speed of the truck was approximately 85 mph and the trooper and Headquarters remained in constant communication about vehicle speed, traffic volume, and other factors.

A few minutes later the pursuit entered the Tip O’Neill Tunnel, which is under the jurisdiction of Troop E of the State Police. Troop E assumed command and control of the pursuit. A short time later, Trooper Rockett lost sight of the truck and the pursuit was terminated. At approximately 5:07 p.m. Boston Police reported that the truck had crashed on Lewis Street in the North End and the driver had fled the scene on foot. At that point, the passenger made claims to responding officers that he had been kidnapped.

At 5:55 p.m., Boston Police officers apprehended DANIELS at North Station and recovered a pellet pistol from the suspect.

State Police Crime Scene Services technicians responded to the scene of the crash to photograph and process the truck. DANIELS and the passenger who claims he was a victim were transported to the State Police Barracks, where the investigation into the incident continues.

No further information is being released at this time.
