State Police Investigating Wednesday’s Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Springfield

Massachusetts State Police Release –03142014– State Police Investigating Wednesday’s Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Springfield

The Massachusetts State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Springfield.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., Springfield Police officers responded to reports of a crash in the area of 1130 Boston Road. Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver, who was operating a 2007 Ford Edge, was leaving the Jiffy Lube station at that address, taking a left onto Boston Road, when he struck a female pedestrian. Evidence suggests the pedestrian was on the sidewalk and was dragged a short distance before the driver realized what had happened and stopped. The victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.

The victim is identified as Zoraida Moctezuma, 55, of Springfield. The driver, whose name is not being released at this time, is a 66-year-old Springfield man.

While Springfield Police generally handle death investigations within the city, State Police are overseeing this investigation because of a familial relationship between a Springfield officer and one of the involved parties. State Police assumed the lead in the investigation at the request of the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office.

At this no point no criminal charges have been filed. The investigation is ongoing. No further information is being released at this time.
