State Police in Mass., Rhode Island Make Arrests in Armed Robbery Spree

Massachusetts State Police Release–01132014 Arrests Made in Armed Robberies

Massachusetts State Police detectives and Rhode Island State Police in recent days have arrested two suspects believed responsible for more than 15 armed robberies of gas stations and convenience stores in both states.

On Jan. 4, Rhode Island State Police (RISP) notified Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) that they had been involved in a motor vehicle pursuit of a car occupied by two suspects who had committed armed robberies in Uxbridge and two locations in Rhode Island. The suspect vehicle crashed during the pursuit and the suspects, both males, fled on foot. One of them, MONCHI CASTILLO-COSME, 23, of Springfield, was apprehended by RISP. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed alleged evidentiary items connected to the armed robberies.

Further investigation revealed that CASTILLO-COSME his accomplice matched the descriptions of suspects who, while brandishing firearms, had robbed approximately 15 gas stations and stores along the Route 91 corridor in Massachusetts, including locations in Northampton and Greenfield.

MSP detectives attached to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office assisted RISP in following up leads into the armed robberies and searching for the second suspect. A search warrant executed at Springfield address connected to CASTILLO-COSME yielded additional items of potential evidentiary value.

Further investigation by MSP and RISP led to the identification of the second suspect as a 16-year-old Springfield boy. Rhode Island authorities obtained an arrest warrant for the robberies in their state charging the boy with robbery, firearms violations, and conspiracy. On Friday morning, troopers from both police agencies went to the Springfield Science and Technical High School, where the suspect is a student, and took him into custody. The boy was allowed to speak with his mother and was then booked as a fugitive from justice. The boy was arraigned in Springfield District Court, where bail was set at $500,000. The juvenile suspect faces rendition to Rhode Island to answer to the charges there. (The adult suspect, CASTILLO-COSME, was booked and arraigned in Rhode Island following his arrest there.)

Additional charges against both suspects reflecting the robberies in Massachusetts are expected.

Massachusetts State Police do not release the names of juvenile defendants. No further information is being released at this time.
