Massachusetts State Police Media Release–10232013–Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Seizure in Adams, MA

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, Trooper Michael O’Brien, assigned to the State Police Barracks in Cheshire, when he stopped a grey Ford Focus on Columbia Street in the City of Adams, for motor vehicle violations.

Tpr O’Brien approached the vehicle to speak with its driver and its occupants.  After conversation with a rear seat passenger, later identified as TYLER SUMNER, 19, from Pittsfield, SUMNER was asked to exit the vehicle.  For their safety, Tpr. O’Brien began to pat frisk SUMNER for weapons.  SUMNER resisted and a struggle ensued.   Tpr. O’Brien and with help from Tpr. Dave McKearney, SUMNER was placed under arrest.  SUMNER was searched and a Colt .25 Caliber pistol was located in his left jacket pocket with one round of .25 Caliber ammunition found in the magazine.

SUMNER was transported to the Cheshire Barracks, where he was booked per State Police policy.  The firearm and ammunition was seized as evidence.  SUMNER was held at the Berkshire County House of Correction pending his arraignment in Pittsfield District Court.

TYLER SUMNER was charged with the following offenses:

1) Possession of a Firearm w/o an FID Card

2) Carry a Firearm w/ Ammunition

3) Firearm Violation w/ 1 Prior Violent/Drug Crime

4) Possession of Ammunition w/o FID Card

5) A&B on Police Officer

6) Resist Arrest
