Massachusetts State Police Media Release–Trooper Makes Narcotics Arrest in Whately

On June 3, 2013 at approximately 7:35 p.m., Trooper Charles Murphy of the Massachusetts State Police Northampton Barracks conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 91 North in Whately for motor vehicle violations.

During the encounter Trooper Murphy spoke with the four occupants of vehicle and had them exit. As Trooper Murphy continued to investigate, he located items within the vehicle consistent with narcotics activity. One of the female passengers admitted to Murphy that she was transporting narcotics on her person for one of the male passengers, later identified as JOSEPH SMITH, 28, of Brooklyn, New York. As a result, the female removed a package believed to contain crack cocaine and heroin and handed it over to Trooper Murphy.

SMITH was then placed under arrest and charged with the following;

1.     Trafficking in Heroin

2.     Possession With Intent to Distribute a Class B Sustance

3.     Conspiracy To Violate Narcotics Laws

The other three occupants of the vehicle were issued summons and charged with narcotics violations.
