Massachusetts State Police Media Release – 10292017 – State Police Arrest Holyoke Man For Discharging A Firearm On Route 391 In Chicopee

Early today at 02:55 a.m. Trooper Jacob Sheehan from the State Police Springfield Barracks Responded to a reported car fire on Route 391 in Chicopee. While enroute to the car fire he was informed that several shots had been fired. Upon arrival he found a 2005 Nissan Altima fully engulfed in flames parked in the breakdown lane. There were also two vehicles parked behind the Altima. A quick investigation determined that these were people who stopped to assist and that the occupants of the Altima were not at the scene.

Trooper Sheehan received the following information from Chicopee Police Department. An off duty Chicopee Police lieutenant traveling on Route 391 northbound observed a large amount of smoke; he then observed a car in the breakdown lane on fire. The lieutenant stopped in front of the Altima to assist. The driver got out of the vehicle and approached the lieutenant after a brief conversation the lieutenant asked if anyone else was in the car. The driver went to the passenger side front window and began banging on it; several other motorists who also stopped to help began banging on the passenger window as well.  The driver then went to the front of the vehicle and pulled a firearm from his waistband pointed it into the air and fired several shots. This occurred with a number of bystanders in the immediate vicinity.  At this point the lieutenant, who was unarmed, left the scene.

After Trooper Sheehan secured the scene, Chicopee firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire. All lanes of Route 391 northbound were shut down.  Shell casings were located at the scene. A search of the area using a State Police K-9 failed to locate the suspect.  State police detectives from Hampden County and troopers assigned to the Firearms Identification Section and Crime Scene Services Section were called to the scene. After a short investigation the identity of the operator was determined to be JONATHAN ROMAN-MIRANDA, a 22-year-old male from Holyoke. ROMAN-MIRANDA has an active License to Carry a Firearm.

An arrest warrant was sought and granted for ROMAN-MIRANDA. The State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, State Police Special Tactical Operations Team, Springfield Barracks Troopers and Hampden County Detectives all responded to the suspect’s residence in Holyoke. ROMAN-MIRANDA was observed exiting his residence and was placed under arrest. A search warrant was executed on his residence and a firearm was recovered.

ROMAN-MIRANDA was transported to the State Police Springfield Barracks where he was booked. Bail was set at $15,000. ROMAN-MIRANDA was then transported to the Hampshire County House of Correction. He will be arraigned in Chicopee District Court.

ROMAN-MIRANDA is charged with:

  • Assault with a dangerous weapon;
  • Discharge of a firearm on a highway; and
  • Disorderly conduct.
