Massachusetts State Police Release–03042013–State Police Investigating Fatal Crash in Wilmington
On Sunday, March 3, at 8:35 p.m., troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Andover responded to a two-car crash on Route 125 in Wilmington, near the North Reading line that killed one person and left two others injured. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the vehicles, a 2013 Toyota Corolla, for reasons yet to be determined crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. The Toyota narrowly missed one other car before colliding, head on, into a 2004 Chevrolet K1500 sport utility vehicle.
The Wilmington and Andover Fire Departments responded to the scene and determined the operator of the Toyota, Roberto Leon, 47, of Andover to be deceased. The occupants of the SUV, a 43-year old-man and a 12-year-old boy, both of Wilmington, were transported by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Their identities are not being released at this time.
Route 125 was for approximately closed for two and a half hours to allow for rescue operations, collision reconstruction, and removal of debris and vehicles.
The exact cause for the crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police. Troopers were assisted on scene by the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Photo, Wilmington and Andover Police Departments and Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
